Biography

Daniel Schär is recognized for his abstract paintings, in which colors are orchestrated with remarkable harmony. In these three works, red does not appear explicitly, yet it remains essential: without it, no other shade in his compositions would be possible.
Based in Switzerland, Daniel Schär has exhibited his work in Belgium, Austria, China, South Korea, Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom. His colorful compositions radiate strength, energy, and joie de vivre, while evoking fields of tension between existence and disappearance. His approach fuses painting and music: from an early age, he developed a deep connection with rock music, Chopin, and Bach. In 1991, inspired by Bach’s cantatas, he undertook a monumental project — painting one work for each of the 200 cantatas — which he completed ten years later. He was later influenced by Arvo Pärt and jazz saxophonist Chico Freeman.
Schär invented his own technique, the “Color Kitchen,” which consists of mixing pigments from around the world while listening to music, allowing sound to guide his gesture. His body of work includes hundreds of canvases inspired by jazz, rock, and classical music.

I associate red with vitality, dynamism, blood and fire, energy and movement, flow and purification, wounds and breaking open. Of course, the context in which red is used in relation to other colors plays a major role. As a result, the color red is not detached from the composition in which it is used and placed in other contexts.

How does my work featured in the exhibition to the use of red in art?

The large painting is entitled “Make Me a Mask” and was created to accompany the song of the same name by the English band Fleetwood Mac. I let myself be guided intuitively by the music. I always try to let the brush flow with the music, to capture moods in color, to respond atmospherically.

The music plays until the image has found its compositional correctness.

The smaller painting refers to the music of Pink Floyd with the title “On the Run.”
